Rock and Roll is Alive and Kicking

Nirvana may have been made legendary by creating Grunge Music along with a handful of mainly West Coast bands. But former Nirvana drummer, Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters should be recognized for saving Rock from fading away, while making it more fun than ever. The Foo Fighters (named for the WWII UFO researchers) have been making music since 1995 but their careers are in full bloom once again. The Foo's new CD "Wasting Light" is their best CD since their first two CD's, their self titled debut and their follow up, "The Colour and the Shape". It may actually be considered the best all around rocker of their careers. Not unlike what the Foo's had done in the past, Grohl and company have reached in to their rock and roll tool box and created a rockfest with pop sensibility. But each song on this CD is strong and unique. Grohl's songwriting is spot-on and will keep you wondering how he can come up with so many great songs on one CD. His lyrics are tactful and intelligent, while his voice is unbelievable. He seems to have about 100 different types of screams and growls but his voice can also be extremely melodic.

Tight Tracks

Dave Grohl is known for his earsplitting screams and crunching guitars. But the quiet moments and the Foo's attention to melody bring a variety to their songs and allows you to hear how good Grohl's voice really is. Taylor Hawkins pounds away on drums while Nate Mendel keeps the changing tempos pumping for the Foo's, while Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett and Grohl blast your ears with the most frenzied yet controlled guitar attack. "Bridge Burning" starts the CD off with a bang and is one of the tightest songs on the list. "These are my famous last words.." Grohl screams, but believe me it's just the beginning. Many of the songs are filled with demons and ghosts from the past, and past heartaches. Some songs are cautionary tales while some are a cry for help. "Rope" is a jazzy tempo rocker that seems to be asking for some of that help. The tempo is so unique and Grohl's screams and growls are great. Grohl shows off his melodic vocal talent in songs like "A Matter of Time", "These Days" and "Walk". But don't let these songs fool you, they may start out slow and sweet and move to jamming guitars and screams, then back again. "White Limo" is a total thrash metal rocker and almost impossible to discern the lyrics. But if you turn it all the way up you will definitely be motivated! " I Should Have Known" is a dark tune that grows more angry as the song progresses. Grohl growls "I can not forgive you yet!" and his pain is evident. "Back and Forth", "Dear Rosemary" and "Miss the Misery" are excellent tunes and will have you singing along in the car long after you turn off the music. "Arlandia" is a fantastic tune that Grohl wrote about his old neighborhood in Virginia and is one of my favorites.

Can't Go Wrong

I have to say, I have been following the Foo Fighters since 1997 and they have never been better. If you haven't listened to them it will be well worth your time to look them up. They are a great band that can play great live, and create the best studio albums your ears will be lucky enough to hear. If you have been listening to the Foo's and have disappointed with the last two CD's, I can promise you that "Wasting Light" will satisfy your mind as well as your ears.
